Kevin Brereton, better known as k-os, is a Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer. Born in Toronto and raised in both the GTA and Trinidad, his time in Trinidad helped push him into music, and has been active in the music scene since 1993 and was the third-best selling Canadian hip-hop artist from 1996 – 2016. His first single “Musical Essence” in 1993 received regular airplay on MuchMusic, going on to win an MMVA. His 2002 album Exit was called “One of the finest hip hop records Canada has ever produced,” by Billboard Magazine. However, despite being critically well-received, with many of the album’s themes about dispelling racial stereotypes and k-os’ discontent with popular hip-hop culture failed to have the desirable social impact.

Disheartened by this, k-os became more frustrated with the music industry at large, but he would continue to release music and perform regardless, signing with Capitol Records in 2000. His second album Joyful Rebellion saw more success, becoming a platinum record in Canada by February 2005, as well as winning Juno Awards for Rap Recording of the Year, Single of the Year, and Video of the Year. 4 studio albums later, and k-os continues to be a pivotal influence on the Canadian music landscape.
