Toronto-based artist Sadboi, wants to use her music to help others overcome their trauma. Born Ebhoni Jade Cato-O’Garro, she uses her experiences to relate to others– whether relationship issues, personal self-doubt, or family drama. Sadboi launched her career at only 11 years old, performing Keyshia Cole’s “Love” at the CNE. She was recognized by a Toronto producer who encouraged her to start recording and writing her own material on YouTube. She released EP Mood Ring in 2017, which was streamed over two million times. She then began opening for big names such as Teyanna Taylor, Rico Nasty, and Dojo Cat whenever they would hit the ‘6ix’.
Sadboi was inspired by various genres growing up, ranging from Buju Banton to Paramore. She notes her most creative writing place as her bathroom, writing her EP huddled there in less than a week. Her Jamaican and Antiguan roots can be felt in her lyrics, as well as her strong connection for Toronto. She often uses T.O slang including in tracks “Slide” and “Bare Chat”. Drake in fact helped choose the album name, Bare Chat, after having co-signed her work.
Formerly known as Ebhoni, she changed her name in 2022 to reflect the darker content she began releasing. Decked out in her signature runny eyed makeup look, Sadboi has gained a significant following since the shift, with die hard fans naming themselves the “crybabies”. A strong believer in mental health, she hopes to help her fans move forward by speaking her truth.
