Lynn Taitt

Lynn Taitt, born in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago, initially played the steel drums for local bands before switching to guitar at age 14. He formed his band and was booked by Byron Lee for the 1962 independence celebration in Jamaica. Taitt then settled in Jamaica, where he performed with several bands, including The Sheiks, The Cavaliers, and The Jets. “”Take it Easy,”” a rocksteady single he recorded with The Jets, reached number one on the Jamaican charts. In 1968, Taitt moved to Canada to work as an arranger for the house band at the West Indian Federated Club. Although he left Jamaica before the rise of reggae, Taitt significantly impacted the genre’s artists, and his work can be heard on recordings by Derrick Morgan, Lee Perry, Bob Marley, and others.

Following his relocation, he continued to pursue his passion for music in Montreal. He collaborated with notable groups like The Kingpins and performed live at the Montreal International Jazz Festival alongside acts such as The Jets and The Fabulous LoLo sings Rocksteady. His contributions to the music industry were recognized in documentaries such as Lynn Taitt: Rocksteady and Ruff n’ Tuff. Unfortunately, he lost his battle with cancer and passed away in Montreal on January 20, 2010 at 75. He will always be remembered as a trailblazer and pioneer of rocksteady music.
