Dominique Fils-Aimé

Dominique Fils-Aimé was born on July 10, 1984 in Montreal, Quebec to immigrant parents from Haiti. She studied at a French high school in Outremont where she grew up. A two-time JUNO Award-winning singer and songwriter, her music reflects the social realities that influenced blues, jazz, and soul, inspired by icons such as Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, and Etta James. Her music and voice create a magnetic presence that captivates audiences, leading them on a transcendent journey.

She was a member of the band Tough Love Groovy Therapy in 2012, and Key of Groove in 2014. As a new musician, she had the opportunity to sing alongside the lead vocalists of each band, rather than performing backing vocals. As she gained more recognition, she met and collaborated with some of the best music producers who invested in her talent and skills.

In 2015, she was a contestant on the third season of La Voix which airs on Quebec’s TVA network. Although she was eliminated in the semi-final round, her career took off, propelling her rise on the Montreal music scene. In 2018 she released her first album Nameless, as the first instalment in a trilogy. A blues-filled record, Nameless explored the roots and culture of African-American music, earning a steady stream of accolades. Its success led to two sold-out shows at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2018.

Dominique released the jazz-oriented Stay Tuned! in 2019 as the second album in the trilogy, describing it as a call to revolution. Following its release, she embarked on a sold-out tour in France, opening for Melody Gardot, Diana Krall, and Ibrahim Maalouf. Stay Tuned! won the 2020 JUNO Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year as well as the Félix Award for Best Jazz Album at the 2019 ADISQ (L’Association québécoise de l’industrie du disque, du spectacle et de la vidéo) gala. It was also shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize and featured among the 19 best Canadian albums of 2019 by CBC. Dominique Fils-Aimé was also nominated as Radio-Canada’s 2019-2020 ‘Revelation in Jazz.’

The soul-themed, call-to-reconciliation final album in the trilogy, Three Little Words was released in 2021 to rave reviews. It claimed the #1 spot for best-selling album in Quebec, and #2 overall in Canada. Three Little Words was also shortlisted for the 2021 Polaris Music Prize.

Her latest album, Our Roots Run Deep, is described as a loose, dreamlike narrative that tells a story of growth. It was longlisted for the 2024 Polaris Music Prize, won the 2024 JUNO Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year, and the Félix Award for Jazz Album of the Year at the 2024 ADISQ gala.
