Gene King

Montreal-born DJ and producer Gene King began his music journey in the late 1970s; he began spinning at school dances and roller rinks by age 13. He has now been DJing for decades and established himself as a major contributor to the Canadian house music scene. His impressive discography has earned him acclaim not only in Canada, but globally.

His father was a musician who played in bands throughout the West Indies, bringing music into the household and helping to inspire King to pursue it himself. He listened to a variety of genres from reggae to rock, influencing his sound. He began in the Montreal club scene, quickly making a name for himself. King moved to Toronto in 1987, where his career flourished both behind the decks and in the studio. In the early 1990s, he turned to music production, releasing tracks on iconic labels such as KMS, Slip N’ Slide, Hi-Bias, Warner, and New York’s 157 Shelter Records. In 2005, he founded Shines Records and later Plusgroove Records, launching a series of underground hits. King created the long-running Vibes N Vinyl show on CKLN 88.1 FM in 1996, which grew into an internationally syndicated program and later evolved into Shines Records Presents.

King’s DJ skills and presence helped bring the underground dance/house scene to the forefront. He continues to mix at various venues and remains an influence in the genre.
