James McQuaid “MCJ” and Richard Gray “Cool G” are a Canadian hip hop duo that were based in Halifax, Nova Scotia until 1988 when they decided to relocate to Montreal. The following year, 1989, the duo signed to Capitol Records in Canada and became the first Canadian rap group signed to a major label. Their sound was comprised of MCJ rapping and Cool G singing most of the choruses, accompanied by new jack swing and rhythm and blues beats. In fact, the two described their style of music as ‘Double R&B’ (Rap, Rhythm and Blues).
In 1990, the duo released their debut album So Listen, which featured hit singles “So Listen” and “Smooth as Silk” which led them to receive their first JUNO nominations. In 1991, MCJ and Cool G were nominated for Best R&B/Soul Recording, Rap Recording of the Year, and Single of the Year. They received another nomination in 1994 for Best R&B/Soul Recording for their single “Love Me Right”. Success continued to follow the duo and in 2007, the African Nova Scotian Music Association awarded them with the Music Pioneer Award, an award which honors individuals who promote a greater understanding of African Nova Scotians (& African Canadians) history, heritage, and contributions to society.
James “MCJ” McQuaid and Richard “Cool G” Gray contribution to the Canadian hip-hop music landscape has not gone unnoticed and their contrbutions to the scene continues to inspire those coming up behind them.
