Born in 1940, Jackie Shane was a pioneering transgender R&B singer in Toronto during the 1960s. Originally born in Nashville, Tennessee, where she developed her love for music, singing in local church choirs. While in Nashville, she performed alongside musical legends such as Etta James and Jackie Wilson. Eventually, Jackie moved to Canada to escape the extreme racism she experienced while living in the US. After arriving in Montreal, Canada in 1960, Shane met Jazz musician Frank Motley, and soon after joining his popular Motley Crew became their lead singer. She toured extensively with the band, both in Canada and the US. Jackie moved to Toronto in the 1960s, and immediately felt a connection with the city, playing to sold-out nightclubs. Shane saw solo success in Toronto nightclubs. even holding the No. 2 place on the CHUM singles charts in 1963 with her single “Any Other Way”. Refusing to record a studio album due to mistrust of record labels, Shane did record a live studio album in 1967, Jackie Shane Live, and her 2017 anthology album, Any Other Way, included recordings of Shane performing and giving monologues during her performances, and was nominated for the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Historical album.
