Messenjah is a Canadian-based reggae group that has now become one the most successful reggae groups in Canadian music history. Formed in Kitchener, Ontario in 1981, the founding members are Rupert “Ojiji” Harvey on lead guitar and vocals, Errol “Skippah” Blackwood on bass and lead vocals, Eric “Baby face” Walsh on rhythm guitar and vocals, and Ray “General” Ruddock on drums.
The group’s first album, Rock You High, was released independently in 1982, attracting attention from Warner Music Canada (WEA), leading to Messenjah becoming the first Canadian reggae band to be picked up and signed by a major label. Their track “Jam Session” from their 1984 sophomore album, Sessions, received positive feedback and major attention on national television and radio. They would return to their homeland of Jamaica in 1985 to play at the World Youth Festival and the Reggae SunSplash festival.
While members such as Blackwood and Rudduck decided to leave the group, Messenjah continued to play and tour with new members Charles “Tower” Sinclair on the bass, and Walter “Crash” Morgan on the drums. They were featured in the 1988 film Cocktail, as well as contributing to the movie’s soundtrack. After many North American tours over the years, the group would play for Nelson Mandela in 1998 at the Sky Dome (now Rogers Centre), and win a JUNO award the same year for their 1997 album, Catch De Vibe.
