Shakura S’Aida

Shakura is a Brooklyn-born blues and soul musician as well as an actress. She was primarily raised in Switzerland before moving to Canada. She has served as back vocalist for Rita MacNeil and Patti Labelle and was a part of a 4-woman tribute band for Nina Simone called ‘The Nina Project’. She has now been operating successfully for over two-decades, impressing audiences with her powerful vocals and bluesy ballads.

As an actress, she has played roles in the Canadian television hit “Schitt’s Creek”, and the Netflix limited series “Titans and Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker”. She began her illustrious career as a member of the 13-piece world music ensemble Kaleefah, before she began her solo career. In 2008 she earned the runner-up position at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis amongst over 100 bands from more than 20 countries. She has been nominated for a plethora of awards including mutiple Maple Blues Award, Juno nominations, the Indie Music Awards, and the Cahor Blues Festival among others. More recently in 2024, she was honoured as a grand prize winner for the SOCAN Her Awards.

S’Aida has taken her sound internationally, spreading a message of equality, community and love. Her latest album, Hold Onto Love, released in 2022, is her first release after a decade long hiatus. The roots album speaks from her heart, and tells her historic story.
