Born in Windsor, Ontario, in 1975 Tamia gained her first big break collaborating with music producer Quincy Jones on the album “Qs Jook Joint” in 1998. In the same year, her debut album Tamia, was released earning two Grammy nominations: Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for “You’ve Put a Move on My Heart”, and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group for “Slow Jams” featuring Babyface. Tamia was nominated for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for her work on the single “Missing You” from the Set It Off Soundtrack alongside Brandy, Gladys Knight, and Chaka Khan. In early 2000, Tamia was awarded the NAACP Image Award for her collaboration with Eric Benet on “Spend My Life with You,” which would also receive a Grammy nomination later that year. Her 1998 hit, “So into You” has been covered by numerous artists, including Childish Gambino on Australian radio station Triple J’s “Like a Version” series. Tamia was featured as a special guest on the Verizon First Ladies Tour in 2004 alongside Beyonce, Alicia Keys, and Missy Elliott. In 2003, Tamia was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and became a prominent voice in raising awareness for the disease.
