Main Source

Based in New York and Toronto, Main Source was an east coast hip–hop music group. The group was formed in 1982 by Toronto DJs and producers, K-Cut, Sir Scratch, Queens MC, and Large Professor. Breaking Atoms was the group’s first album, released in 1991. It featured hits such as “Looking at the Front Door,” “Just a Friendly Game of Baseball”, “Live at the Barbeque”, and “Watch Roger Do His Thing”.

The group, however, dispersed before the second release of the second album, The Science. Meanwhile K-Cut and Sir Scratch released another album, Fuck What You Think, along with a new member called Mikey D. The bassline from “What You Need” track was sampled by Madonna for her song “Human Nature” in the album Bedtime Stories in 1994.

Large Professor became an instrumental producer for artists such as Eric B. and Rakim, Pete Rock, Nas, Diamond D, and CL Smooth. Other founder, K-Cut, also worked with hip-hop artists like Maestro Fresh Wes, Queen Latifah, Big Pun, and NBA star Shaquille O’Neal. The founding members of Main Source got together in 2002 to perform together in 10 years at a concert held in Toronto.
