Nova Scotia Mass Choir

“The two–time ECMA award-winning Nova Scotia Mass Choir was Founded in 1992 and is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The choir uses its genre of black gospel music to spread awareness about specific cultural attributions of Africans in Nova Scotia throughout the province. The choir uses its music and composition to spread the message of racial harmony.

The choir has performed at multiple local and international stages. In the year of 1993, they performed at a concert in memory of Martin Luther King Jr. in Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, in 1995, the choir performed with Oliver Jones, a Canadian Jazz pianist, organist, composer and arranger. This performance was held in Halifax, and in the same year, they released an album on the Jongleur label.

The choir showcases diverse musical pieces, including works by talented local composers, musical directors, and choir members. In addition to these original compositions, the choir also puts its spin on traditional gospel and folk music. This choir holds benefit concerts several times yearly, intending to support the local harmony and help different charities.
The choir has about 40 members today from diverse backgrounds. As of September 2023, they are working on a CD to be released n which they will start a province-wide tour.”
