Ranee Lee

Born in 1942, in Brooklyn New York, Ranee Lee moved to Montreal, Quebec at 28, where she later started her musical career. Throughout the 1970s Ranee toured North America as jazz drummer, tenor saxophonist, and starred in plays like Bille Holiday and Lady Day. Ranee went on to release her debut album “Live at the Bijou” in 1984, which was the start of her impressive career. In 1994 Ranee received the Top Canadian Female Jazz Vocalist Award by Jazz Report Magazine for her album “I Thought About You” and won again in 1995. Ranee continued to be recognized for her work as in 1995 she also received her first nomination for a Juno Award for Best Mainstream Jazz. March of 2003, she received another Juno nomination for “Maple Groove: Songs from the Great Canadian Songbook”. In April of 2010, Ranee won her first Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year for her album “Ranee Lee Lives Upstairs”. Aside from her thirteen studio recorded albums Ranee has also performed with many respected jazz artists like Clark Terry, Bill Mayes, Herbie Ellis, Red Mitchell, Milt Hinton, and many more. She has also gone on multiple tours with her own group throughout America, Spain, France, and England, as well as playing at many acclaimed jazz festivals like; Montreal International Jazz Festival. Aside from contributing to history of the Canadian Jazz landscape Ranee Lee is also an educator where he uses her expertise in jazz to educate those who are studying the genre as well. Ranee has been part of the University of Laval and the Schulich School of Music at McGill University for over twenty years. In 2007 McGill’s Schulich School of Music awarded Ranee with an award for continuous growth the McGill Jazz Program. Ranee Lee also referred to as “Montreal’s Queen of Jazzis performer, musician, vocalist as well as an educator.
