Freddie James was born in 1964, in Chicago, Illinois and moved to Montreal, Quebec at an early age. He was surrounded by musical influences since birth, as his mother Geraldine Hunt was a successful singer, writer, and producer in the music scene.

At the age of 14, James started his musical career by releasing his EP, Get Up and Boogie, in 1979, which his mother Geraldine Hunt contributed to. The EP was a hit as in 1980 he received two JUNO Award nominations, for Single of the Year, and Most Promising Male Vocalist. Within that same year he won the Canadian Black Music Award for Best Album. In the following year 1981, he released his second album Sweetness.

While on tours throughout the U.S and Canada the demand to see James live allowed him to also tour in Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore, and Indonesia. Throughout the 1980s he was involved in a couple of theatrical productions; in 1987 he appeared in the Montreal production of Hair and landed a supporting role in the film Wild Thing.

James stepped away from the music landscape and started his comedy career by attending open mic nights with his friends. He continued attending open mic nights to learn how to work the stage and get his comedic timing right. Over time, James was doing shows in well-known clubs like The Comedy Nest and The Comedy Works. In 200, he was picked to perform at Club Soda during the Just for Laughs Festival.
