On the memorable night of November 23rd, the City of Toronto Archives hosted a celebration centred around the impactful work being carried out at the CBMA, coupled with a joyous celebration of Black Canadian music, and the evening commenced with words of gratitude from the executive director of the CBMA, extending thanks to everyone for joining the journey towards a better understanding, appreciation, and a stronger sense of identity for Black Canadian musicians.

The Canada Black Music Archive (CBMA) stands as a vibrant and invaluable educational resource, delving deep into the multifaceted history of Black Canadian music. With an extensive collection comprising music, photographs, interviews, and historical documents, the CBMA is on a mission to raise awareness about the voices and experiences of Black Canadian musicians. It seeks to foster a greater sense of identity, recognition, and belonging within the national narrative, and this vision came to life at our official launch event.

The atmosphere was set ablaze with a soul-stirring performance by Liberty Sliver and Eddie Bullen. Liberty Silver, a three-time Juno Award winner, and the renowned pianist, arranger, producer Eddie Bullen mesmerized the audience with their musical prowess, setting the tone for an unforgettable night.

Following this remarkable performance, the stage belonged DJ Carl Allen. As he provided an entertaining mix of Black Canadian music, attendees had the opportunity to explore the past and current works within the CBMA. The event showcased some of the earliest contributions towards upholding Black Canadian music through WORD magazine, emphasizing the legacy seamlessly carried forward to the present through the CBMA.

Engaging with the current works of the CBMA, attendees encountered multiple banners highlighting legendary artists from our archive, including Oscar Peterson, Glenn Lewis, Maestro Fresh Wes, Michie Mee, Jackie Mittoo, and Nathaniel Dett, accompanied by insightful biographies and amidst conversations, laughter, and the enchanting backdrop of music, the evening reached its climax with the final performer, the charismatic Mr. Jay Douglas. His undeniable stage presence delivered an unforgettable performance, bringing the night to a close.

To all those who attended and contributed to the success of this milestone event, the CBMA extends heartfelt thanks. Gratitude is also extended to those who, though unable to participate, have shown interest in our work and supported from afar. This official event marks just the beginning of the CBMA’s envisioned journey, and we eagerly anticipate continuing this path with your unwavering support.
