Ali Brownman

The evocative tunes of Ali Brownman have been featured in a range of styles from be-bop, to hip hop, salsa, and blues. Training under Grammy-winning Randy Brecker, this trumpeter is at the forefront of the Canadian Jazz evolution. Brownman was born in Trinidad and Tobago, moving to New York for schooling, and eventually settled in Toronto. He is a highly sought after player, composer, and arranger who has been credited in over 300 CD studio recordings. He is a collaborator and leader of six bands including, his award-winning jazz group, CRUZAO.

CRUZAO was nominated from 2002-2004 for the NJA’s “”Electric Jazz Group of the Year”” award and was the 2001 winner of Montreal Jazz Fest’s “”Grand Prix Du Jazz””. The win would lead to a deal with Justin Time Records, the renowned Canadian label. Another group of Brownmans’, the Miles Davis inspired Brownman Electryc Trio, has also attracted critical acclaim. The trio has won and been nominated for several awards including multiple Toronto Indepedent Music Award wins. Brownman himself holds many accolades including, a National Jazz Award nomination and win for “”Jazz Composer of the Year”” and was nominated three-times for “”Jazz Trumpet Player of the Year””. He has performed on picture soundtracks, music videos, television broadcasts, and appeared in Jennifer Lopez’s movie, Angel Eyes, in 2002.

Brownman actively composes for his own groups and is featured in many latin groups’ horn sections. His incomparable talents make him an integral part of the Canadian and international Jazz community.
