Anslem Douglas was introduced to music at a very young age. He was born on July 23rd, 1964, in a small village in southern Trinidad. He began performing at his local community center as a child and at his Pentecostal Church. Douglas exposed to the arts by his sister, who was a talented poet.
At sixteen, him and several of his friends formed the band ‘Exodus’ and they quickly gained in popularity. Following this, he joined the coast guard for six years and while enlisted, he continued to hone his talents in the coast guard band.
He has a natural talent for music and is a versatile musician. His genres and his influences range from gospel, reggae, calypso and R&B, among others. His mix of sounds can be attributed to his admiration of Caribbean Stars Blakie and the Lord Kitchener, as well as R&B vocalists Peabo Bryson and James Ingram. Douglas brings a mix of styles to his music and created major hits including “Ragga Poom Poom”, “Good Music to Dance” and his internationally acclaimed Grammy-winning hit “Who Let the Dogs Out””.
While living in Canada for more over 20 years, he was awarded best Caribbean-Artist at the 2014 Black Canadian Awards, among other recognitions. His album Sir Anslem Douglas, discusses hard hitting issues including domestic violence, and the need to ‘break the cycle’. He continues to perform, record and write music.
He has expanded his belt with other endeavors including writing children’s books, as well as a book that will document the story of his mega hit “Who Let the Dog’s Out””.
