Celebrating 1 Year with CBMA!
Genre: R&B, Soul
Period: 1996-present
Region: Toronto, Ontario
Carlos Morgan is an R&B and soul singer-songwriter born and based in Toronto, Ontario. He began singing as a child in the Church of God of Prophecy and grew up listening to artists like Nat King Cole and Stevie Wonder. Morgan’s taste in music has always been versatile, ranging from genres like gospel, jazz, and pop, to rock and even classical.
As a young man, Morgan performed with local Toronto bands Blue Zone and Lypstick prior to signing with D-Tone Records as a solo artist in 1996. That same year he released his debut album, Feelin’ Alright. The album received support from Vancouver’s CKZZ-FM radio station, which placed singles like “Give It to You” and “Baby C’mon” into rotation more than any other Canadian radio station. Morgan went on to receive the Juno for Best R&B/Soul Recording in 1997, as well as the MuchMusic Video Award for Best Soul/R&B Video for “Give It to You”, the 1998 Canadian Urban Music Award for Best Male Vocalist and Best R&B/Soul Video, a SOCAN Music Award, and a Caribbean Cultural Committee Award.
Morgan did not release another album until 2012, although he did put out a few singles in the early 2000s. His second album entitled The Compilation was released in 2012 under his own label, Solroc Music, which was a mix of his early 2000s non-album singles and newly recorded material. The Compilation received an award for Best Male Artist and a Role Model Certificate of Recognition from the 2014 Black Canadian Awards. In 2017, he was honored by the City of Toronto for his musical contributions to Toronto.
In 2021, Morgan received his Master of Arts degree in community music at Wilfrid Laurier University. In 2022 he put out two singles, “Just Jane” and “We’re Gonna Make It,” and performed a lecture on Black Canadian music history at the Niagra on the Lake Museum the following year. He has since been working on his third album, Where I’ve Been, Where I’m Going, which is set for release in 2024.
