Citizen Kane is a hip-hop duo from Toronto who began in the mid-1990’s. The group is comprised of J-Spade (Jeff Duke), a first generation Canadian, and Black Nova Scotian Blye (Rob Paris). J-Spade was introduced to the Canadian hip-hop scene as a dancer for Miche Mee and Dream Warriors. Their debut single in 1995 was titled “Soul Survivor,” followed by several singles and their first album The Epic in 1997. In 1999, their second album Deliverance was released. Both albums were recognized, winning the Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year in 1999 and 2000. In 2001, the National Film Board of Canada released the documentary “Raisin’ Kane: A Rapumentary,” which highlights the underground hip-hop scene in Canada, and the plight faced by Canadian artists striving for mainstream success.
