Corie Rose Soumah

Corie Rose Soumah is a Canadian composer from Quebec, who is now living in New York. Soumah has a unique interest in shaping fractured and reconstructed sound components, which means taking broken or fragmented sounds to piece them back together. By doing this, she is creating hyper-collages through music, where the layers and textures of the sound are more intense and complex. This method blends different elements and aesthetics, such as music styles and genres from the perspective of afrodiasporic geologies.
Despite being so young, Soumah has a long resume of all she has accomplished within her music career. She has an extensive list of different ensembles and performers who have performed her works such as The International Contemporary Ensemble, the Flux Quartet, the guitar ensemble Instruments of Happiness, and New Music Concerts. She has also had the privilege of having her works being performed at institutes like the Fontainebleau Schools of Music and Fine Arts, Festival Musica, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and countless others. She is the 2025 Cortona Winner for her composition “States of Intermeshing: xi. Épilogue”.
Soumah believes in the importance of the relationships between music and other artistic forms, which is why she has contributed to many multidisciplinary projects with students from l’École supérieure de Ballet du Québec and students from the Conservatoire d’art dramatique de Montréal. Currently, Soumah is pursuing her Doctoral degree in composition at Columbia University, building on her Bachelor of Music degree from the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, while also working on new pieces and collaborations.
