Daisy Elitha Peterson Sweeney was born in 1920 in Montreal, Quebec. The sister of the legendary Oscar Peterson, she was an exceptional artist in her own right, specializing in jazz and classical piano. Her father, was a Canada Pacific Railway porter, bought a piano and became a self-taught musician, later teaching Daisy how to play and share her knowledge with her siblings. She took this responsibility beyond their home, and continued teaching as a career. She earned an associate degree in music from McGill and begin teaching the next generation of Canadian jazz artists. As a talented organist, Daisy played at various churches, and formed a choir – later run by Trevor Payne- at the United Union Church. The Black Community Youth Choir would later become the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir in 1982. In 1987 she received an honorary doctorate from Laurentian University, and was a recipient of the Martin Luther King Award. She was also awarded a Certificate of Recognition from the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, a symbol of appreciation for Daisy’s many contributions to her community, and to the whole of Canada. She passed away on August 11th 2017; the city of Montreal would later name a park and street in honor of an amazing woman who helped shape the landscape of jazz in Canada.
