A huge promotor of Caribbean content and culture, Dick Lochan remains a staple in Calypso culture in Canada. Lochan came to Canada in 1966, completing high school and then went on to attend York University earning a Bachelors Degree in English. He began working as a public servant in 1975 with Canada Customs, and retired in 2008 as Regional Director of the Canada Border Services Agency. He also worked as a journalist and would not enter the music scene until he was middle aged, entering the industry as ‘D’Juiceman’. He has released three albums under his stage name, and is known in both Trinidad and Toronto as an A-list lyricist, performer, and artist. He is a published author of three books in the Trinidadian Dialect, ‘Doh Make Joke’, ‘Fuh True’, and ‘So It Go’.
Lochan has always had a strong connection to his roots and wished to pass his knowledge down. While working as a writer for the newspaper ‘Contrast’, he met John ‘Jayson’ Perez. The two created Canada’s first Calypso music program for youth and children called ‘Pass the Torch’ in 2004. Known as ‘Uncle Dick’ to his students, he taught them Calypso music, culture and arts. The students at the end of the program were asked to create their own sound based on their own life experiences while also using what they have learned from the program. The school was a success in educating the communities youth and even producing content; the program managed to release more than seven CD’s, two songs of which have been nominated for the Canadian Music Awards. They hold a captivating stage presence, performing at the Caribbean Carnivals junior event.
Unfortunately, after a hard fought battle with Leukemia, Lochlan passed away on Januray 12th 2017 at the age of 68. Never wanting to lose his roots, he wished to add Caribbean culture to Canada’s melting pot—and through his music and tutelage, he certainly did.
