Divine Brown was born in 1974 and raised in Toronto, where she began writing songs at the age of 14, preparing her demo by the age of 18. Heavily influenced by R&B singers such as Chakha Khan, Patti LaBelle, and Aretha Franklin, Divine Brown released her single, “Old Skool Love” in 2005 without an album and was invited to perform internationally at music festivals, despite not having released an album yet. When her self-titled debut album did arrive, it was met with underground success. She released her second album, The Love Chronicles in 2008, which won the Juno Award for Best R&B/Soul Album of the Year. Brown toured with the Backstreet Boys’ Unbreakable Tour in North America during 2008 and contributed background vocals for Toronto artist Drake’s Take Care album. She has found success in musical theatre as well, starring in plays such as RENT, Aint Miss Behavin’, Life, Death and the Blues, and the Obeah Opera.
