Toronto based DJ Mel Boogie continues to be one of the most well-known DJ’s nation wide. Born as Melissa Langley, the versatile musician began her career in college radio, hosting the graveyard shifts. She remained with CHRY 105.5FM for six years before moving onto 88.1FM as DJ and co-host of Droppin’ Dimez Radio, Canada’s only all-female hip-hop show, and is now currently the host and DJ for Toronto’s VIBE 105FM. Her mixes and ability to engage audiences have led her to host events including Canadian Music Week, the North by North East Indie Showcase, and she has been a speaker and panelist for many music industry conferences. She has also hosted several corporate events for Guess, Roots Canada, House of Hoops, and the YMCA Girls Action Foundation, among others.
DJ Mel Boogie has built a name for herself nationwide and internationally. Throughout her 30 plus years as DJ and radio host, she has opened for Kevin Hart, Lebron James, Nick Canon (Wet N’ Wild Out), Major Lazer, Lauryn Hill, and Busta Rhymes. On radio, she has interviewed the likes of Common, KRS-One, and Flo’etry. Not only a skilled musician and anchor, Boogie wears many hats, having collaborated with multiple artists and labels on an international level. She is a freelance writer and publicist, contributing PR to varying artists including, Jully Black, her brother Maestro Fresh Wes, Ron Artest, and for Caribana Music Festival.
Among her many accolades, she is the resident DJ for Canada’s longest-running all-female showcase, Honey Jam, launched in 1995. She has been awarded the Stylus Female of the Year Award, listed as One of the Most Inspiring Women in the Creative Arts for the Luminatos Mille Femmes Exhibit, and in March, 2024, was honoured for her 30 plus years and Career Achievement by Women in Music Canada. She is recognized as a true pioneer in Canadian Hip Hop.
As board member for UMAC (Urban Association of Canada) and member of the Juno Advisory Committee for the Rap Category, Boogie has broken several barriers for female disc-jockeys and continues to support and build a foundation for emerging artists.
