Dr. Mark V. Campbell

Dr. Mark V. Campbell is a DJ, curator, and scholar. His contributions to the Canadian music and education fields have been integral to preserving the Black Canadian music legacy. He is known for being the founder of Northside Hip Hop, a digital collection of Canadian hip-hop, history, and culture. This living archive documents and preserves the many greats of the genre in an untraditional archival format. Dr. Campbell has over two decades of being embedded in the culture as both educator, historian and DJ. He was the co-founder of the 1997 hip-hop radio show, Bigger Than Hip Hop. He continues to DJ on occasion under the name DJ Grumps.

As an educator, his primary research focus is on Afrosonic innovations and notions of human and he acts as Chair in the Arts, Cultural and Media Department at the University of Toronto. Dr. Campbell currently teaches there and is the Principal Investigator in the SSHRC funded research project, Hip Hop Archives: The Poetics and Potentials of Knowledge Production. He has also published several books on the subject including, We Still Here: Hip Hop in North of the 49th Parallel with Dr. Charity Marsh (2020) and Everything Remains Raw: Photographing Toronto hip hop Culture from Analogue to Digital as part of the 2018 Contact Festival exhibition at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.
