Dubmatique

Formed in 1992 in Montreal, Quebec, French Canadian hip hop group Dubmatique have been making breaking ground in the French hip hop scene since the early 90s. Original members Disoul and OTMC met in Senegal in the 1980s, before Disoul moved to Montreal, Quebec in the early 1990s. Disoul joined a radio show that was called Dubmatique, before he decided to use the name for his newly formed hip hop group. Shortly after, OTMC came to Canada and joined the group, along with DJ Choice.
By the mid 1990s, the group were performing shows in local clubs, and collaborating with other artists in the French Canadian scene. In 1997, the group released their first album, La Force De Comprendre. The album was well-received and earned them chart-topping success on commercial radio programs and music video-TV channels. The album received a Felix Award – the Quebecois equivalent of a Grammy Award – but in the “Alternative Rock” category: at the time, there hadn’t been any category for rap or hip hop in the history of the Felix Awards.
