Errol Starr is a multi-genre artist who found music at a young age. Though he was born in Jamaica, he emigrated to the United Kingdom when he was just two years old, moving to Canada shortly after that, he settled in Kitchener, Ontario. Being influenced by his father, who was a reggae musician in the band People’s Choice, music was constantly around him. When he was young his father got him his first guitar, which is when his musical journey began. He began playing as a guitarist for his father’s band, and would also play in rock bands with friends. By the time he was a teenager he even got special permission from the LCBO to allow him to play underaged in bars and clubs in Toronto.
Toronto is where his career grew. During the 1980s he would perform solo as a R&B singer, while also being the front man for the rock band Harbinger. In this period he released the singles “Holding Out for You”, “The Key”, and “For the Love of Money” in 1986 and 1987. After releasing the singles he debuted his first album Temple of Love, on A&M Records in 1987. In that same year he participated in the recording of a Christmas charity single called, “A Christmas Wish”, which included a number of Toronto-area performers such as Kim Richardson, Billy Newton-Davis, and Salome Bey.
During the 1980s and the 1990s however, there were many difficulties for Black Canadian musicians to get radio play despite their talent and popularity. Unfortunately, Errol was one of many musicians that this occurred to, and A&M did not renew his contract for another album.
As a result, in the early 1990s he moved to Hamilton, where he worked as a record producer and would record music for film, television, and commercials. It was during this era that he formed a country duo with Mike Northcott, called North Starr. They released an album called From the Inside Out, in 1994.
Since then he does the occasional performance, but he has also became the CEO of SpaMusicStream, where he creates original relaxation music for spas. He also supports youth through music and digital arts programs in Oakville, including school outreach and work with at-risk children. In 2024, he told his story in the short film Temple of Love: The Errol Starr Story.
