Everett Cooper (King Culture)

Everett Cooper, professionally known as King Culture, is a musician, producer, technician and audio engineer. Born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, he had worked in record shops and pressing plants before making the move to Toronto, Canada in the late 1970’s. His expert knowledge would lead him to opening King Culture Records in 1979 operating on Eglinton West Avenue in Little Jamaica; the shop still operates at this location. He created his own record label as well, working with the likes of Prince Jr., Prince Jammy now King Jammy, The Mighty Diamonds, Wayne Smith, and many more prolific reggae musicians and producers of that era. He released several compilation albums in the ‘rub a dub’ style and dancehall style.

The multi-talented ‘rootsman’ has given services to many of the city’s neighbourhood including Jane and Finch, Regent Park, East York, and of course Little Jamaica from Keele and Eglinton, to name a few. For his many contributions to the Little Jamaica community, he is featured in the Reggae Lane mural at Oakwood and Eglinton. The mural was painted by Adrian Hayles, sits at 1200 ft., and features many of the game changing musicians that helped shape the neighbourhood. Cooper also sits as the event planner and board member of Eglinton Hill’s Business Improvement Area (BIA) and is the founder of Eglinton Hill’s Kiddie Community. His collection is renowned and respected amongst DJ’s and collectors worldwide. He continues to sell his records, and to a fortunate few, even provides his own cover art.
