Four the Moment was formed in 1981 by Delvina Bernard, Kim Bernard, Deanna Sparks, and Jackie Barkley in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Their first appearance was at an anti-racism rally in the city to perform “Joanne Little” by Sweet Honey. The group performed songs written by George Elliott Clarke and Delvina Bernard. They mainly chose songs about the Black Nova Scotian experience, mixing acapella music with hints of blues, gospel music, and reggae.
Delvina and Kim Bernard were the two permanent members of the group. Andrea Currie replaced Barkley, and Debby Jones was first replaced by Sparks and then by Anne Marie Woods. Their first album, We’re Still Standing, was released in 1988. Additionally, they got featured in Lillian Allen’s album Conditions Critical as contributing musicians. Afterwards, they continued to perform around Canada at music festivals and the 1988 Winter Olympics. They did not release any other album but toured the world until 2005. Music Resistance, a short documentary film about the group in 2022 at the FIN Atlantic Film Festival, brought attention to the group again. Following that, Nova Scotia Music Week paid tribute to the quartet. At the 2022 Polaris Music Prize ceremony, We’re Still Standing won the jury prize for the Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize.
