George Banton

Also known as Mr. Soul, the Canadian gospel artist George Banton is renowned for his powerful voice and his ability to evoke deep emotions across various genres including reggae, R&B, gospel, and country.

Born in the Parish of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, Banton’s musical journey began in childhood, singing in his hometown church choir. He went on to sing solo in several churches across Jamaica.

At just 18 years old, Banton formed the gospel group The Hope Brothers. After two years, he moved to Kingston where he improved upon his skills in guitar playing, songwriting, and production. His breakthrough came when he was discovered by the music director of Gospel Light, one of Jamaica’s top gospel groups. He joined the group and in 1972 moved on to the Grace Thrillers, where he wrote the #1 hit “Too Late Shall Be Your Cry.” The song, along with others, helped cement his reputation as a talented songwriter and performer.

In 1976, Banton moved to Canada and continued his music career. He formed the 7-piece gospel band The Bantons in 1977, releasing the single “Glory To His Name” under his Love-Light label. Despite the band’s disbandment in 1980, George explored various genres, showcasing his versatility. His 1981 debut solo album, If You Don’t Love Me, Leave Me Alone, featured the hit “Faithful and True,” which topped Canadian charts for ten weeks. He continued to release successful singles and albums throughout the 1980s, including You’re All I Need, in 1985.

His single “No One Can Love Me Like You Do” earned him a JUNO nomination in 1986, and another JUNO nomination for “How Could I Let You Get Away” in 1990. Throughout his career, George has stayed true to his roots, with his latest gospel album marking his return to gospel music. With his vocal ability, Banton continues to inspire audiences worldwide, earning accolades such as the 2021 Jaria Honour Award: Gospel Artist Icon Award.
