Grand Analog is a Canadian hip-hop band from Winnipeg, first formed by Odario Williams in 2002. The band was originally a side-project, while his primary focus was his main band Mood Ruff. Unfortunately, in 2006 Mood Ruff broke up, however this was an opportunity for Williams to shift, with a new focus on hip-hop and reggae.
Grand Analog is made up of a distinctive mix of musicians, which is how the band achieved their unique sound. Williams is the creator and lead vocalist, while his brother Ofield Williams is a DJ and producer. Warren Bray is the bassist and a producer, TJ Garcia is the drummer and singer, Aubrey McGhee is the sax player and producer, and Alister Johnson is a producer. Each band member contributed their own sound to each of their songs. Their sound is also influenced by Odario and DJ Ofield’s father. He was a reggae DJ in the 80s, and shared his love of music with his sons. Grand Analog is unique, in that like their name, they use vintage analog gear to create their music.
During their time as a band they regularly came out with albums, starting in 2007, with their first album Calligraffiti. Two years later in 2009, they came out with their sophomore album called Metropolis is Burning. The album topped the Canadian community and campus radio hip-hop chart for several weeks Their third album Modern Thunder, was released in Canada in 2013. Their fourth album, Survival, came out in 2018.
They have performed all over, with artists such as The Roots, Future, Big Boi, and Little Dragon, as well as toured with K-os, Bedouin Soundclash, Kardinal Offishall, Cadence Weapon, The Herbilizer, and more. They have performed at prestigious showcases and festivals such as SXSW, CMJ, Pop Montreal, and more. They were last active in 2018.
