Gregory Charles is a diverse entertainer who takes influence from many genres. Born in Montreal, Quebec in 1968, Charles began his musical journey at a young age when he started playing classical piano. His mother was interested in him not only playing music, but learning the origins of music, so that he could fully understand and appreciate it. When he was 7 years old, he won his first national competition and went on to perform with some of Canada’s major symphony orchestras. He knew that the stage was for him, and made his TV debut in 1989 as an actor in the Québécois drama series Chambres en Ville. From there, he became a television host on The Debrouillards, before he joined the teaching faculty on the singing competition show Star Académie. He has also conducted and was a musical director for the Collège Vocal de Laval.
It was in 1998 that he joined Céline Dion as a back-up singer and featured pianist on her world tour, which put him on the map. This inspired him to take to the stage in 2002 for his first one-man show called Noir and Blanc. A few years later in 2004, he released an album called Gospel Live Noir et Blanc. The album portrays a deep understanding of his knowledge of music, and allows him to infuse elements of jazz, soul, and classical influences, making the gospel music uniquely his own. In 2006, he went on and produced another album called I Think of You, which sold 109,000 copies in its first week and was nominated for a JUNO award. He was nominated for a JUNO once again in 2007 for Artist of the Year. He sold more albums than any other Canadian artist that year, other than Nelly Furtado. He has performed at the Bell Centre in Montreal 43 times, and has ticket sales that are only second to Céline Dion, and ahead of Bono and U2. In June of 2016, Gregory was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada by Governor General David Johnston as a result of his efforts to keep the performing arts thriving in Canada.
