Ian Keteku

Ian Nana Yaw Adu Budu Keteku uses triumphant wordplay, frank assertions, and his powerful stage presence to spread a message of peace, action and critical thought. The author, poet, musician, teacher and director has performed internationally, with his works translated in multiple languages including Slovak, Russian, French, Danish and ASL. Throughout his career, he has worked with big names in both the literature and music fields.

Keteku debuted his art with poetry collection Black Abacus (2016). The book explores sense of self and the universe; these themes would become a major part of his works, reflected in future music and publications. Combined with topics like social justice, mental health, race, diversity, and even romance, his art helps audiences connect with their inner emotions. He has also published two spoken word albums; Lessons from Planet Earth (2011) and Love and Lumumba (2015). He often captures journeys through Africa in his collections, drawing from his Ghanaian roots.

Keteku has written for TVO, PBS, Crave, Sesame Street and CBC. He is even featured in the CBC documentary IF The Poet, where he coaches a middle aged man to enter the world of slam poetry. Originally from Calgary, Alberta he now resides in Toronto where he continues to spread his positive message of self-worth and the importance of honouring one’s history. He has taught art-activism and creative writing at OCAD University, and has shared his knowledge on platforms such as TED Talk. Keteku conducts workshops for all ages, which focus on performance, poetry, and other writing– pushing others to be inspired by the power of their own voice.
