Celebrating 1 Year with CBMA!
Genre: R&B, Soul, Pop
Period: 1993-present
Region: Ontario
Born in Spanish Town, Jamaica in 1971, Gerald Eaton (known by his stage name Jarvis Church) entered the music scene first as the lead singer of the R&B band The Philosopher Kings. Eaton’s trajectory with the Philosopher Kings reached its peak in the 1990s, which was followed by the group taking a ten-year hiatus. Eaton would find success in his solo career as Jarvis Church, as well as producing for fellow Canadian artist Nelly Furtado. Church has been nominated for several Juno Awards, both as a solo act and as part of the band, including Producer of the Year in 2002 for his collaboration with Furtado on her album Whoa, Nelly! Church collaborated with Somali-Canadian artist K’naan, producing his 2005 album The Dusty Foot Philosopher, which went on to win the 2005 Juno Award for Best Hip Hop Album.
While Church has seen success and received recognition in his career all his own, his work as a producer for artists such as Nelly Furtado and K’naan cement his influence on the Canadian music industry. One of the many Black artists who have worked behind the scenes, and helped uplift other artists’ careers, Eaton’s influence on the musical landscape is significant and timeless.
