Joni NehRita draws from her experience as a Jamaican Canadian musician to highlight the beautiful things in life, while also reflecting the reality of our current times. As a Jamaican Canadian, NehRita is influenced by Afro-Latin and Caribbean sounds.
She has been working as a music educator for more than 20 years, establishing a high level of respect in the industry. She has taught privately, in workshops and masterclasses, in high schools, and in universities like the University of Guelph, Wilfrid Laurier University, and Seneca at York. NehRita also leads workshops, panels, and is a speaker for various events around the globe.
Joni NehRita released her fourth full-length album titled Love & Protest, in 2021. In the album, she continues to illustrate themes of global roots, heritage, and world music, while keeping her sound groovy and melodic. She explores the pros and cons of love being the answer to peace or fighting fire with fire. Influenced by legends of soul music like Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, and Aretha Franklin, NehRita uses the guitar and Caribbean/Brazilian percussion techniques to develop her sound.
