Jully Black has been named one of the 25 Greatest Canadian Singers Ever by CBC Music. She has written for various artists, including fellow Canadians Saukrates, Choclair, and Kardinal Offishall, as well as Nas, Sean Paul, and Destiny’s Child. Black was signed by Warner/Chappell Music at the age of 19 and was courted by Universal Music Canada shortly after. She received her first Juno Award nomination in 1997 for “What it Takes,” a collaboration with Choclair. Black won a MuchMusic Video Award for her collaboration on 2Rude’s single “Dissin Us” in the category of Best R&B/Soul Video in 2000. Black released This Is Me in 2005 under Universal Music Canada, which includes her hit singles “Sweat of Your Brow” and “5x Love.” Her 2007 single “Seven Day Fool” became her first Top 10 hit in Canada, and in the same year her second album Revival was awarded the Juno Award for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year. She was a correspondent on the sixth season of Canadian Idol, and hosted the 2008 Canadian Radio Music Awards, and has been featured as a celebrity reporter for ETalk, interviewing the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Jay-Z, and former President Bill Clinton. Black performed in Vancouver at the 2010 Winter Olympics, and in the same year represented Ontario in CBC Radio 2’S Great Canadian Song Quest for her song “At the Roncies.”. Black was selected to perform and open for Celine Dion at the 2012 Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival in 2012 to honour Jamaica’s 50th Anniversary of Independence. In 2018, she won the esteemed BBPA Harry Jerome.
Not only a singer/songwriter, Black has also graced the stage in many theatre performances. Her lead role as Caroline in Caroline, or Change, won her the Toronto Theatre Critic’s Award for Best Lead Performance in a Musical and the coveted Dora Award for Outstanding Performance in a Leading Role. Black continues to make music and is a fervent promoter of female empowerment and physical/spiritual health. In 2022, she released auto-biographal album Three Rocks and a Slingshot. The highly-rated album ranked high on music charts and featured collaborations with M.I.A., Jay-Z, Ty Dolla Sign, and Major Lazer.
