Kerwin Du Bois

Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, in 1977, Kerwin Dubois is an accomplished composer, writer and producer. After he began singing while still in primary school, Du Bois was encouraged by his history teacher to pursue music competitions. He went on to take part in the first ever Junior Calypso Monarch Competition in Trinidad in 1991, winning the title the following year. From there, he continued to climb the calypso ladder and began experimenting with sound engineering and audio editing. His voice was aired on numerous stations, and he became the voice of Soca music throughout London, England. As an experienced and qualified composer, many musicians have collaborated with Dubois, including Bunji Garlin, Xtatik, and H2O Phlo. Now based in Canada, Du Bois continues to be a leader to young Soca musicians and admirers, encouraging them to participate in the artform. During lockdown Dubois kept busy and created SPUT – Sing, Produce, Unleash Talent – a music program for young artists. For over two months Du Bois surveyed social media platforms and sought out young talent, stories, and voices. His incubator now fosters 30 participants and 25 members for the program, all coming from varying regions. The first SPUT project Kembler Riddim is produced by Synthdicate Music and features 10 voices and 17 writers, including Kerwin. The singer is now branching into cinematography and is working on movie project SCRIBD (Soca Creates Rampant International Powerful Dominance) which is meant to dispel the notion that there is no unity in Soca. The film follows different artists while in Cuba, showing them in their element; whether eating, recording or interacting with the natives. He plans to expand the project to other territories and explore other cultures.
