Lazarus J. Finn, also known as Lazo, was born in Castle Bruce, Dominica, where he started his musical career at the age of 15 with a band called Black Blood. When he migrated to Canada in 1979, he went on to form his own band, Unity, which highlighted his own compositions. After relocating to Toronto, Ontario, he created Lazo Reggae and released the recording “Satisfaction Guaranteed” in 1987, which was well-received by the public. After the release of “”Satisfaction Guaranteed””, Lazo released two records Impetus in 1993, and Something Real in 1995. Impetus garnered positive feedback, and was the first independent album to chart on Vancouver’s Z95.5 Top 30.
Lazo went on to be chosen as the Top Reggae Performer of the Year at the Canadian Reggae Music Awards and was also nominated for several awards including, a Juno nomination for his album Something Real in 1995. He was the winner of the 2000 Juno Award for Best Reggae Recording for his album Heart and Soul and received another nomination for album, Children of the Palm Race. Lazo has toured throughout the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean, playing at several international festivals in countries like Brazil, El Salvador, Argentina, and more. He has performed at venues like Hard Rock Café, House of Blues, and many theaters across the US and Canada. He has also performed with groups like the Wailers on their US and South American tours.
Besides his illustrous music career, Lazo has another passion in life which is food security. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in political science and is known as an environmentalist. Lazo feels strongly about growing organic products, establishing community farms, and collective farming. He has worked in Toronto with the Black Creek Community Center and the Black Farmers Collective. These two organizations help work to ensure that shelters and senior groups are supported by donating food to the community.
Starting his musical career at a young age, Lazo has made a name for himself with his music in the reggae community, and with his activism in his local community.
