Leroy Gibbons has left a deeply rooted legacy in the Canadian reggae scene. Originally from Gregory Park, St. Catherines, Jamaica he migrated to Canada to join the rest of his family in the 1970s. He brought his dancehall, reggae, and gospel talents with him, joining a budding reggae scene in Toronto.
His career took off in the 1980s following the release of several tracks including “Cupid”, “Missing You”, and “Magic Moment”. He would often record covers of old but popular tracks, putting his lovers rock style in the mix. He worked with several musicians and producers, one being renowned record producer, King Jammy. Through Jammy’s label, Gibbons released album Four Seasons Lover, which earned him significant recognition. For a time, he was also a part of group, The Roys, with Leroy Brown and Roy Reynolds. His fans spanned globally, reaching Jamaica, the U.S., the U.K., and Canada.
Gibbons called Toronto, Canada home for over 50 years and was well established in the community. He was very active in the Little Jamaica neighbourhood along Eglinton West, known for its record stores, studios, food and Caribbean culture.
Gibbons was shot in 2017 after being in the wrong place at the wrong time. This experience brought him closer to God and gave him a new life perspective, he notes in an interview with the Jamaican Gleaner. Later in his career, he released gospel EP, Heaven Bound (2022). Back home in Jamaica Gibbons often performed gospel with groups like The Gospel Proclaimers; this album was a long awaited wish to return to these roots.
On June 17th, 2025, Gibbons sadly passed at the age of 74. His life was celebrated by numerous musicians, producers, and sound system engineers in Toronto on June 26th, 2025 at the Jamaican Canadian Association (JAC). Beloved by his community, he is remembered as a formidable talent and patient mentor.
