Macomere Fifi

Eulith Tara Woods, otherwise known by her stage-name Macomere Fifi, is a master storyteller and Calypso artist. She has won record-breaking awards, including six Canadian Calypso Monarchs, four Miami titles, and was runner-up in the highly-competitive Calypso Queen competition in Trinidad and Tobago in 2003. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, she watched, studied and respected the calypsonians—she recalls waiting for them to hear their views on the issues of the day. It was then that she learned of music as a storytelling artform. By day she is a social worker, and by night she perfects her craft and prepares for competitions. She performs around the GTA, as well as travelling to Hong Kong and London, England to represent Canada as a calypsonian. She uses her artform to speak on hard hitting issues and rally the people together. One of her contributions “Tackling the Issues” outlines her stance on President Barack Obama, the Jane and Finch corridor, and former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. She sees women as trailblazers in the genre, recognizing that they have come a long way since it was strictly “a man’s thing”. In 2013, her exceptional achievements were acknowledged with a Caribbean Music and Entertainment Award. She would be honored again in 2017, being elected the President of the Organization of Calypso Performing Artistes (OCPA). Not only is Calypso a way to tell a tale, but it is also a family affair for Fifi: Her daughter Mandy Woods is a rising reggae artist, and the two have performed together, showing a generational passion for the stage. She wishes to see the artform continue to be passed down and to grow, stating that while she may never be rich, “…I can leave them a legacy. I could leave them a culture”.
