Tony Young was Born in Leeds, England, in 1961. Professionally known as Master T, the would be renowned on-air personality, moved to Canada with his Jamaican family in 1974. He attended school in Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School. He attended Mohawk College in Hamilton to study television broadcasting and started work at MuchMusic as a camera operator. He then became a VJ for MuchMusic, working from 1990 to 2001 and hosting programs like “Rap City.”
His work directly influenced the growth of urban music in Canada and his shows were some of the highest rated programs. While still there, he acted as its primary promoter of “MuchDanceMix,” a series of collection CDs. For his exemplary work as a music promoter, he was acknowledged with a diamond plaque for reaching over a million in sales. His broadcasting is responsible for introducing audiences to many of the popular reggae artists of today including, Beenie Man, Sean Paul, Shaggy, and more.
After he left MuchMusic, he focused on producing and promoting his hip-hop and reggae compilations as Master T’s series. He then acted as a host of a syndicated radio program, “Wall of Sound” by CIDC FM. Furthermore, Young hosted online interviews with RX Music Live with guests like Vance Joy, Wyclef Jean and Kardinal Offishall. Over his career, he has interviewed mega-stars including, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Lauryn Hill, Snoop Dog, and Dr. Dre, just to name a few. He is also noted as the last person to interview Tupac before hs death in 1996. He received “The Ghanian Community Award, the Toronto Bob Marley Award, and the Mohawk College Alumni of Distinction Award, among others.
Master T continues to host, produce, publish, and directs Esor Productions with his wife. His work opens doors for musicians and listeners alike.
