Michael Casimir

Michael Casimir is a highly accomplished violist known for his versatile artistry and dedication to advancing classical music. Currently serving as Principal Viola of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Casimir has garnered international recognition for his performances with leading orchestras and his contributions to music education.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Casimir began his musical journey at the age of two, studying violin under his father, a music educator who came to the United States from Haiti. He later transitioned to viola after being inspired by a BBC performance of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante. Casimir pursued formal training at Oberlin College and Conservatory before transferring to The Juilliard School, where he earned his undergraduate degree under Heidi Castleman and Misha Amory. He completed his post-baccalaureate studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in 2018.
Casimir’s achievements include winning second place in the 2011 and 2015 International Sphinx Competitions and securing the grand prize at the Hudson Valley Philharmonic String Competition in 2013. He has performed as Principal and Co-Principal Viola with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and collaborated with esteemed ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Additionally, he has played on soundtracks for Disney’s The Lion King (2019) and Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021).
Beyond performance, Casimir is deeply committed to education and community engagement. He serves as Orchestra Director at Lindenwood University and frequently adjudicates competitions while conducting masterclasses across North America. His creative ventures extend to composing music for mobile games and producing video projects.
