Seth Nyquist, better known as MorMor, is a Toronto-based indie pop musician and producer. He was adopted by a Swedish family and raised in the Oakwood Village area of Toronto. His mother encouraged Nyquist to be creative, and as a child, he took to drawing, journaling, defying music theory rules as he learned the piano, and listening to bands like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Radiohead. In high school, Nyquist sang in the school choir and played trumpet in the band. His moniker, “MorMor,” is a reference to his grandmother, the word meaning “grandmother” in Swedish.
After high school, Nyquist briefly studied sociology at Ryerson University, before dropping out to pursue music. He spent the rest of the year taking intensive vocal and piano training, learning how to use programs like GarageBand and Logic on a laptop gifted to him by his aunt, and writing songs. He played the occasional show with friends during this time, but his career took off when fellow Toronto-based musician Daniel Caesar began to share Nyquist’s song “Heaven’s Only Wishful” within music industry circles. The track was featured on an OVO Sound Radio guest mix by Pharrell Williams and his OTHERtone co-host Scott Vener. It became a viral hit afterwards, gaining over 3.5 million YouTube views and surpassing 3 million Spotify streams. He released an EP of the same name in 2018.
The following year, Nyquist continued to release songs and put out another EP, Some Place Else. He went on a 20-date tour of Europe and North America, playing with other Toronto musicians like BADBADNOTGOOD’s Alex Sowinski. He was also nominated for a SOCAN Songwriting Prize for his song “Whatever Comes to Mind.”
Nyquist released his first full length album Semblance in 2022 through his own label, Don’t Guess.
