Muhtadi Thomas came to Canada from Tobago as an immigrant in 1974. He started drumming at 16 and became dominant in African drums and other percussion instruments. Muhtadi is the founder and the artistic director of Muhtadi’s International Drumming Festival. The annual Muhtadi International Drumming Festival was initiated for three days, featuring drumming groups representing cultures and styles worldwide. Members include individuals from First Nations communities all over North America, China, Japan, Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean.

Thomas played nationwide and across the globe, breaking barriers created by oceans. He spent most of his time teaching drumming as he understood that the drum is one of the instruments that is at the centre of music in most cultures and wanted to highlight its importance as it deserves. He plays many persecution instruments such as bongos, timbales, djembe, steel pan, etc. Later, he taught drumming to drum enthusiasts at schools and community-based projects. He is a winner of the Harry Jerome Award that was presented recognizing his work with at risk youth in Toronto, in 2011. Thomas performed at the Queen’s Jubilee, Yonge Street Festival, Lion Dance Festival and Luminato Festival.

In 2012, Thomas was diagnosed with Parkinsons, however, support from his family and his community, keep him positive.
