Nova Scotia Mass Choir

The two–time ECMA award-winning Nova Scotia Mass Choir was founded in 1992 and is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The choir uses its music to spread awareness about cultural contributions of the Black diaspora in Nova Scotia and to spread the message of racial harmony.

The choir has performed at multiple local and international stages. In the year of 1993, they performed at a concert in memory of Martin Luther King Jr. in Washington, D.C. Then in 1995, the choir performed with Oliver Jones, a Canadian jazz pianist, organist, composer and arranger. This performance was held in Halifax, and in the same year they released an album on the Jongleur label.

The choir showcases diverse musical pieces, including works by talented local composers, musical directors, and choir members. In addition to these original compositions, they also put their spin on traditional gospel and folk music. The choir holds benefit concerts several times yearly, intending to support the local harmony and help different charities.

The Nova Scotia Mass Choir has about 40 members today from diverse backgrounds and continues to create harmonizing music for their audiences.
