Jamaican singer and songwriter Otis Gayle, was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1946. The Studio One veteran began his career as a vocalist for The Virtues, and later with Byron Lee and the Dragonaires. He joined both groups internationally, performing on stages across Europe and in Canada. While in Canada for a festival, he fell in love with the country and decided to make the move in 1967.
Gayle released several solo hits while continuing to work with Byron Lee and the Dragonaires. His solo work was majorly successful with a notable version of the Detroit Spinners “I’ll Be Around” for Clement “Sir Coxson” Dodd at Studio One, and track “Heaven Must Have Sent You” which won him a coveted Juno Award in 1985 for Best Reggae/Calypso Recording. This was particularly impressive as he was one of the first Black artists to do so. He became known for his connections, performing with greats like Barry White, Joe Tex, Stevie Wonder, and Jackie Mittoo. He is recognized as a pioneer in the industry and is a member of the Jamaica Association of Vintage Artistes and Affiliates.
Gayle relocated home to Jamaica in 2005 and continues making music. His latest album in 2020 titled Shine On, features 14 tracks including hits like “100% of Love” and “Think It Over”. Not only does he continue to write, sing, and perform, he does so both locally and internationally. For his many contributions here in Canada, he is featured on the Reggae Lane Mural in Toronto’s Little Jamaica community.
