Pluggy Satchmo

Born John Gilbert Peck, also known as Pluggy Satchmo, was at the forefront of Reggae culture and music both in Jamaica and Canada. Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, in his early career he was a dancer for Beryl McGar and the mysterious Sparky. He, Sparky and Beryl formed their trio and together they entertained tourists on the east coast in the mid 1950’s. He won the Vere John’s Opportunity Hour talent contest as a solo act, but was still very committed to the group. He began recording outside the trio and released a medley album in 1983 alongside Jamaican musician, Owen Gray, along with other projects.

Peck migrated to Canada in 1986, still continuing working with McGar, as Sparky had left for the UK. His solo career became a main focus; he was successful and signed with TP Records. His debut album Porridge featured fellow Jamaican Canadian Lord Tanamo and Norma King. This album payed tribute to idol Louis Armstrong, featuring songs like “What a Wonderful World”, a cover of Nat King Cole’s “Mona Lisa”, and Fats Dominos’ “Blueberry Hill”. His pseudynom was in fact inspired by his admiration of Louis Armstrong. In 2000 he was presented with an award of merit at the 16th annual Canadian Reggae Awards.

Peck worked as an animal technician at the University of Toronto’s Department of Zoology until his retirement. He sadly passed away May 17th, 2022, at the age of 90. He is remembered for his sense of humour, and his love and knowledge of Jamaican music and culture. His face graces the Reggae Lane mural at Oakwood and Eglinton in Toronto’s Little Jamaica.
