Rascalz

Rascalz are a Canadian hip-hop group from Vancouver, British Columbia. The group consists of Red1, Misfit and DJ Kemo and past members Zebroc and Dedos. The group formed in 1991 and released their debut album Really Livin independently in 1992. The album got picked up the following year by Sony Music Canada. Really Livin saw success as it received radio play in Vancouver on stations like Z95.3, however, their second album Cash Crops in 1997 brought them even more success. While hip-hop and rap were becoming more mainstream around the world, in Canada the genre still lacked visibility. At the 1998 Juno Awards, Cash Crop won Best Rap Recording, however the award would be presented during the non-televised portion of the ceremony. The group felt that there was a lack of real inclusion of Black music in the ceremony and emphasized that Black music should be shown on the main stage just like the other genres. Rascalz politely refused to accept the award to highlight that hip-hop should get the platform it deserves and to help push the culture along. Their stance against the Juno Awards sparked a significant amount of media debate surrounding the state of Canadian hip-hop, which was very beneficial to the plight. As in the following year (1999), the Best Rap Recording category was moved to Juno’s main ceremony which the Rascalz won for their single “Northen Touch”. Through the release of their music and standing for what they believe in, the Rascalz played a crucial role in the development of Candian hip –hop.
