Sate

Saidah Baba Talibah, stage name SATE is a singer/songwriter from Toronto. Daughter of restaurateur Howard Matthews and decorated Canadian blues and jazz singer Salome Bey. She began her musical career as an occasional performer with her mother, under the name Salome Bey and the Relatives. In the 90s she was a vocalist for the funk rock band Blaxäm, with her sister Tuku. They released the EP Kiss My Afro in 1998, but unfortunately the band broke up before they could release a full-length album.

After the band broke up, she continued on her music career solo, still going by her given name. In 2011, she released her debut solo album called (S)cream. For this album and era of her music career, she was inspired by Black Rock Coalition artists, such as Living Colour. Her sound was also a result of being surrounded by music her whole life, both by her mother and by the countless music legends that she met.

A few years later she decided to change her name to SATE, because she thought her given name was giving audiences the wrong impression of her. She believed that her new name much better suited the image of a rock singer. Her music is a result of experiences in life, and the culmination of her lifetime being spent surrounded in music of all kinds, both by her mother and the countless music legends she’s met. She found her own voice by adding sounds of punk and hard rock. During this new era of her life, she also became influenced by astrology, numerology, tarot, and her spiritual connection to her surroundings, which can be seen in her two albums REDBLACK&BLUE and The Fool. Released in 2016, REDBLACK&BLUE is a demonstration of her spiritual connection to the black panther, red robin, and blue butterfly. The animals represent her daughter, mother, and sister. The song “Know My Name” from the album was used as backing music in promotional advertisements for Sportsnet. Her next album The Fool is a demonstration of her evolution. Like after its tarot card namesake, this album explores beginnings and faith in the universe that everything will work out.

She is a captivating singer who performs truly energetic performances for audiences around the world. She has performed at music festivals like the Afropunk Festival in Brooklyn, Paris, and London, the Paleo Festival in Switzerland, and many more. Her namesake is a promise that her music will fully satisfy anyone who listens.
