Sinzere

Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, Sinzere is making an impact in the rap and hip-hop genre. Born to a Jamaican mother and Bajan father, Sinzere uses her own struggles and ancestral history to create powerful music. The multi-talented DJ, dancer, rapper and lyricist channels the spirit of Queen Latifah, Kendrick Lamarr, and James Brown in sound.

Growing up listening to R&B, funk, reggae, and dancehall, she uses a fusion of the genres to tell her musical journey. The young artist found love for performance at a young age when acting in a school play. After listening to 90’s rap, she gravitated towards music and stories of oppression being taught through songs of the decade. This deeply influenced her shape as an artist and in the early 2000’s, she formed a dance group, noting that dance was a free-form of expression, helping her cope with trauma. After meeting Blacka Ranx, a DJ in her area, his influence pushed her into becoming a DJ herself. She became the #1 female DJ in Western Canada during this time, noting him as a mentor for her career. Unfortunately, Sinzere would lose the love of dance and DJing after the death of Blacka Ranx. Sinzere began freestyling, born again from ashes, and after building structure and joining The Beach Advanced Audio Production team, they saw potential in her works.

Sinzere’s single “On Time” became the top three of CBC’s Searchlight in 2018, she is now a four-time YYC Music Award winner, and Ampia Rosie Award nominee. Her debut album, Tabula Rasa, was named as top 25 Canadian albums of 2022, and the track “The Mission” from the same album was dubbed one of the best Canadian songs of the year. Her storytelling abilities extend beyond sound, with her music video “Ric Flair Flo” featured at the 2023 Toronto International Women’s Film Festival, and finalizing in the Cannes World Film Festival and the Rome Music Video Awards of the same year. In March of 2024, she was honoured with a special dinstinction by SOCAN Her Music Awards.

Her latest album Tabula Rasa, describes her journey to re-learning her African history and herself as a Black woman. With her unique blend of funk and rap, Sinzere spreads the story of the unyielding and resilient African diaspora.
